The Wilshire Private School each year conducts a full week of special activities which they refer to as Spirit Week. Some of their notable school values include academic excellence, involvement and enmeshment in American culture and a loving responsibility and accountability with the earth. Farming's Future gave a workshop on Gardening Day during their last Spirit Week.
Special thanks to Jacqui Baric and Cathi Comras for this event. Farming’s Future facilitated the botanical lessons and the planting of two bare root fruit trees. While half of the student body (thirty in each group) went out into the yard collectively digging one of the holes, the other half sang and danced in the classroom learning about the vascular system of these trees including xylem, phloem, roots, photosynthesis, bark and fruiting. It was a kick and a half and fun for all involved.
When each group completed their half of the program, they switched and soon the second digging was completed. Head of School Marlin Miller gave a ceremonial dedication among all students and teachers on the yard while both trees were planted and troughs measured and leveled. Wilshire Private School plans to harvest their first crop as a gift to the entire surrounding neighborhood to thank them for their hospitality and being kind neighbors. Both trees were generously donated by the Tree People.
